This article defines a word and clarifies its application and usefulness in scale studies.

Kinematics is the geometry of motion as it is applied to the theory and mechanisms of machines. Franz Reuleaux (1829-1905) developed a system for classifying kinematic mechanisms and created hundreds of models to embody his basic machine elements. His book The Kinematics of Machinery (1876) built on the methods originally published by Georg Andreas Böckler, Theatrum Machinarum Novum (1661).

The prefix kine- is used in kinematics, kinesthesia and kinesthetic.
